Mr. Chen said that his son read a high school this year, it is the development of a long period, a summer vacation in the past head can grow five or six centimeters, not "tall" desks and chairs have become children's "growing troubles."
The height of desks and chairs cannot keep up with the growth rate of students' bodies, a problem that has long been discovered. At the beginning of the year, the municipal People's Congress representatives submitted proposals related to this at the National People's Congress. Chen Nenghua, a representative of the municipal People's Congress, told reporters that in the visit to the masses, they learned that some primary school students can now grow to 1.7 meters, and the traditional uniform desks and chairs make the children very uncomfortable. In the "Suggestions on Strengthening the myopia prevention and control System of children and adolescents in our City" jointly submitted by representatives Nie Linfang and You Hongyan, they put forward a series of suggestions on the prevention and control of myopia of children and adolescents, including providing suitable desks and chairs, bright classroom lighting and other good school environment.

Wang Xiaoquan, principal of the No. 2 High School Affiliated to Fuzhou University of Education, said the school replaced the first 1,300 sets of adjustable desks and chairs for the third grade and some classes in the first and second years of high school. "After the switch in November, the children generally responded well." Wang Xiaoquan said that there are two conditions for choosing the class to replace the desks and chairs, one is that the class's desks and chairs are used for years, and the breakage rate is higher; Second, the height difference of children at this stage is large, and there is a strong demand for adjustable desks and chairs. He also said that although the use of such desks and chairs has a little impact on the cleanliness of the classroom, it is not important in terms of the healthy growth of students. This year, the school declared another 1,200 sets, and next year more classes will be able to use the new desks and chairs.
The reporter also learned from Fuzhou Jinshan Primary School that the school previously used a desk with a standard height of 70 centimeters, and the newly replaced desk can be adjusted to cover a height of 60 centimeters to 80 centimeters. The new class tables and chairs are favored by tall students, who report sitting comfortably.

It is a real need for desks and chairs to "grow taller". Statistics from the Fuzhou education department show that the average height of seventh grade students in some schools in Fuzhou has increased by about 6 centimeters in 2023 compared with 2013.
In late April this year, the Municipal Education Bureau replied to the NPC deputies "on strengthening our city children and adolescents myopia prevention and control system recommendations" mentioned that in order to improve the visual environment of students, in addition to continue to promote myopia prevention and control classroom lighting renovation project, but also encourage schools to purchase adjustable desks and chairs in line with standards, sitting orthotics, and personalized adjustment of the height of students' desks and chairs every semester. Make it adapt to the growth and development of students.
At present, there are schools in Fuzhou such as the Second Affiliated Middle School of Education Institute and Jinshan Primary School using adjustable height desks and chairs on a pilot basis. The Municipal Education Bureau is taking the lead in developing new management methods for desks and chairs according to the feedback of the pilot units in the early stage to guide the schools that purchase and use them in the follow-up. Leaders of the Municipal Education Bureau said that a special piece of education development funds has been earmarked to implement this work, and there are still four counties (cities) districts that have not started this work. It is necessary to communicate with the local education and financial departments, formulate some supporting awards and subsidies policies, and encourage the counties (cities) districts to implement this work as soon as possible.
The leaders of the Municipal Women's Federation said that the desks and chairs follow the children's head "long" and respect the personality differences of students, which fully demonstrates the people-oriented education concept, and also makes Fuzhou a national child-friendly city more and more temperature, hoping that this new class desks and chairs will enter more and more primary and secondary schools in the future.
